Lake County Yard Waste Disposal Guide: EcoBox Dumpsters

Yard work does not slow down in Lake County. By late June, lawns are growing fast, storms roll through, and weekend projects pile branches and bags of leaves along every driveway. That is when many people start asking if they can just toss everything into a yard waste dumpster and call it done.

The rules are stricter than they look at first. Grass, branches, dirt, and trash are not all treated the same. When the wrong items get mixed together, you can run into extra fees, rejected loads, and delays with your project. A yard waste dumpster can be a big time saver, but only when it is loaded the right way.

In this guide, we break down what counts as yard waste in Lake County, what can and cannot go into a dumpster, how weight limits work, and where your yard debris actually ends up after we roll away.

When people say yard waste, they usually mean anything green that comes off the lawn or garden. For most Lake County homes and job sites, that includes:

• Grass clippings  
• Leaves and leaf piles  
• Small branches and twigs  
• Brush and hedge trimmings  
• Pulled weeds and dead garden plants  

Those are the easy items. The gray areas are what cause trouble. Here are a few that come up a lot:

• Sod vs dirt: Thin strips of sod with a bit of soil attached are often treated as yard waste. Big chunks of dirt or piles of soil are not.  
• Mulch: Clean wood mulch is usually fine. Mulch packed with plastic, rocks, or trash is a different story.  
• Bagged vs loose leaves: Leaves are still yard waste either way, but plastic bags count as trash and can contaminate the load if they are not emptied.  
• Storm-damaged shrubs: Broken bushes and branches from a storm are still yard waste, as long as they are not mixed with fencing, metal, or roofing.  

Many towns in Lake County do not allow yard debris in the regular trash stream. That means yard waste has to be handled on its own, which is why it matters how you load a yard waste dumpster. A clean load gives you more options and keeps things simpler at drop-off.

• Leaves, grass, and brush  
• Small branches and limbs cut to a safe length  
• Non-treated wood scraps from landscaping projects  
• Pulled weeds, dead plants, and garden cleanout debris  

Branch size does matter. Very thick or long limbs can be hard to handle and can push weight up fast. Cutting branches down to shorter pieces helps them settle in the dumpster and makes hauling safer.

Here are common “no” items that surprise people:

• Large volumes of soil or fill dirt  
• Rocks, gravel, and concrete chunks  
• Railroad ties and landscape timbers  
• Pressure-treated lumber or stained deck boards  
• Landscape fabric loaded with soil, rock, or mulch  
• Mixed household trash or bagged garbage  

Those items are not treated as yard waste and can send the whole dumpster to a different disposal site. That often means extra handling and higher costs.

Some materials need special attention:

• Invasive plants: Certain invasive species are not welcome at compost sites and may need to be bagged or handled separately.  
• Diseased trees or plants: These might be kept out of normal compost if they could spread disease.  
• Large stumps: Heavy stumps are very dense, hard to load, and often require special handling or separate equipment.  

If those end up mixed into a basic yard waste load without approval, the entire dumpster may be treated as contaminated, which can lead to extra fees or a change in where it can be taken.

Dumpster rentals in Lake County typically include a set rental period and a certain amount of weight. When the dumpster goes over the included weight limit, extra charges can apply. If debris piles up above the fill line, the container might not be safe to haul at all.
